Take a Breath.
Let’s Walk Through This
Together.

Accidents are stressful. It’s completely normal to feel shaken.
Right now, focus on staying safe — then follow these simple steps.

Make Sure Everyone Is Safe

Before anything else, take one slow breath and look around.

Step 1: Check for Injuries

  • Check yourself and your passengers for any signs of injury. Even minor pain or dizziness should be taken seriously. If anyone is hurt, call 911 immediately.

Step 2: Move to a Safe Location (If Possible)

  • If the vehicles can be driven and it’s safe to do so, move them to the side of the road or out of traffic. Turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.
  • If the vehicles cannot be moved, remain inside with your seatbelt fastened until help arrives — unless there is danger (fire, smoke, etc.).

Step 3: Call Emergency Services if Needed

Call 911 if:

  • Anyone is injured
  • The vehicles are blocking traffic
  • The scene feels unsafe
  • There is significant property damage
  • If police respond, ask for the report number before leaving.
Stay Calm and Keep It Simple

It’s completely normal for adrenaline to kick in. Try to slow things down and focus on facts.

Keep Conversations Brief

When speaking with the other driver:

✅ Be respectful and calm

✅ Exchange required information

✅ Avoid discussing fault

✅ Do not argue about what happened

This is not the time to determine blame — that will be handled later.

Avoid Common Mistakes

Do:

✅ Stick to basic facts

✅ Cooperate with officers if they arrive

✅ Take your time documenting the scene

Don’t:

Admit fault

❌ Apologize in a way that could be interpreted as accepting blame

❌ Feel pressured to give detailed statements on the spot

Exchange Basic Information

Gathering the right details now helps your claim move smoothly later.

Collect From the Other Driver

Be sure to collect:

  • Full name
  • Phone number
  • Insurance company
  • Policy number
  • Driver’s license number
  • License plate number
  • Vehicle make and model

Take photos of their insurance card and driver’s license if possible.

If Police Respond

  • Ask for the officer’s name
  • Request the report number
  • Ask how to obtain a copy of the report
